Allan Fairhead

Allan was born in January 1944 in High Wycombe, Bucks, the family moved to Hastings East Sussex late 1944, where he grew up, went to school and started work from 1944 to 1969.

He was educated at St. Mary-in-the-Castle Infant School, St. Paul’s Junior School and Hastings Grammar School for Boys.

He started work in 1960 at F. W. Woolworth, Hastings, in the stock room (with some buyer duties), also as relief at other stores until Stock Room Manager at Bexhill store.

Allan was promoted to Buyer at a London store which he didn’t want, so resigned.

He went to work in stores at L. G. Hawkins (manufacturers of hostess trollies, kettles, hair driers etc) becoming Stores Manager.

Then, decided to work with his father in caravan repair and maintenance from 1969 to 1975.

Late 1975 worked at Pontins Bracklesham Bay, as painter, joiner, maintenance manager, Asst Manager.

He transfered to Osmington Bay as Asst Manager then Acting General Manager, finally transferring to Selsey as Deputy Manager, until 1988.

From then Allan worked as sole trader in caravan repair and maintenance, expanding the business employing more staff until becoming the Managing Director of the Ltd Company.

Allan sold the business, premises and home in 2010 to retire and move to Hythe, where he has been an active supporter and volunteer to save the pier, assisting the Poppy Ladies and has an interest in Parish affairs.
