Conservative Group also deny Lib Dems scrutiny role
At a noisy meeting of the New Forest District Council on Monday 14th October 2019, the Conservative Group once again denied there was any kind of climate emergency and admitted they had no clue as to the carbon footprint of the Council, within one of the most sensitive areas of the country.
Answering a question put down by Cllr Malcolm Wade (Butts Ash & Dibden Purlieu) about actions being taken by the Council to counter the environmental threat, Cllr Alison Hoare, the Portfolio Holder for the Environment and Regulatory Services said they did not have the figures for the carbon footprint of the Council.
Conservative Councillor Cllr Steve Rippon-Swaine even suggesting that the footprint ‘could be zero’ which raised many eyebrows in the Council chamber.
The newly elected Liberal Democrat Group had proposed a Climate Emergency motion at the first Full Council Meeting of New Forest District Council held on Monday 20th May 2019 which had been passed to a sub-committee and then voted down by the overwhelming Tory dominated group.
The full text of the Motion is included in notes below.
A Motion put down on Monday calling for Chairs of Scrutiny Committees to be shared with the Opposition Liberal Democrat Group also fell by the Conservatives voting it down.
Lib Dem Cllr Jack Davies (Pennington) had put down the Motion and said:
“The most effective way of ensuring proper scrutiny of decisions made by the ruling administration is for Overview and Scrutiny Committees to be chaired by councillors not from the ruling administration.” (Full text of the Motion below)
Cllr David Harrison (Totton South), Leader of the Liberal Democrats said “These two issues combined show the Conservative Group cannot accept the blindingly obvious and cannot stand criticism.
By default they cannot be trusted.
They do not show leadership on a whole range of issues affecting local people.
I am determined that the Liberal Democrats will show leadership on climate change and constantly scrutinise the work of the ruling Administration. “
