"End the botch-job road repairs", say Lib Dems
Liberal Democrat Councillors are calling on Hampshire County Council to “end the botch-jobs” and fix roads at the first time of asking.
At a recent meeting of Lymington and Pennington Town Council, Cllr Jack Davies said over 100 people had been in touch with him to raise concerns about the state of our roads. Jack proposed a motion to raise these concerns with Hampshire County Council.
Presenting his motion, he said:
"The current state of the roads in Lymington and Pennington, including the High Street and surrounding residential areas, has reached an unacceptable level of disrepair.
"There is significant local concern regarding the quality of road repairs, with many potholes requiring attention shortly after being fixed.
“Hampshire County Council has made the decision to cut proactive road maintenance, shifting toward a reactive ‘emergency-only’ model that allows the overall highway network to deteriorate."
The motion went further and argued that contractors should be held financially accountable for poor road repairs. This was backed by most Councillors - but not the incumbent Reform County Councillor.
Lib Dem candidates for Hampshire County Council, including David Millar in Lyndhurst and Fordingbridge and Wyn Davies in New Milton, have also been leading calls in their parts of the New Forest for a “fix it first-time” approach to road repairs.
