Lib Dems demand fair representation and slam Tory hypocrisy on Hythe Ferry

Following a disastrous night for the Conservatives, who lost control of 15 councils across England, the Liberal Democrats are calling for a more democratic and balanced approach to local government - including here in the New Forest.
Nationally, the Liberal Democrats gained control of three major councils and made strong gains in many others. The message from voters is clear: people are demanding change, accountability, and a more collaborative style of politics.
In the New Forest, the Liberal Democrats are urging the Conservative-run District Council to respond to this shift by allocating scrutiny panel and committee chair positions on a proportional basis, ensuring fair representation for all parties.
“The days of one-party dominance in council decision-making must end,” said Malcolm Wade, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on New Forest District Council.
“If the Conservatives are serious about democratic legitimacy, they should reflect the actual balance of votes and voices around the council table.”
The Liberal Democrats also criticised the Conservative administration for its refusal to contribute funding towards the urgently-needed renovation of Hythe Ferry pontoon and dolphins - vital infrastructure supporting a key local transport route.
“While the Tories talk about the need for the district to ”speak with one voice" on local government reorganisation, they're simultaneously ignoring a core part of the district's transport network and the residents who rely on it," Cllr Wade added. “That's not leadership - that's hypocrisy.”
The Liberal Democrats reaffirm their commitment to fairer, more transparent local government and to standing up for every community across the New Forest.
