Liberal Democrats aim to take control of New Forest District Council in 2027
New Forest Liberal Democrats have set their sights on taking control of New Forest District Council for the first time in decades, as the Conservatives cling to a narrow majority following a series of defections.
With 14 district councillors already in place, the Liberal Democrats believe the 2027 local elections offer a real opportunity for change and are stepping up efforts to recruit candidates, expand their volunteer teams and reach more residents.
The ambition was outlined at the party’s Annual General Meeting, where outgoing Chair Philip Dowd praised the dedication of local campaigners and urged members to build on recent electoral successes - most notably at the recent County Council elections, where the Liberal Democrats won more seats than any other party across the New Forest.
“We have a plan. Now we need to put that plan into action. We’ve done it before, we can do it again, and together we can win,” he told members.
Guest speaker Martin Tod, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, addressed the uncertainty surrounding local government reorganisation and its implications for councils and residents.
He stressed the importance of protecting local identity, maintaining strong public services and ensuring communities have a meaningful say in decisions affecting their future.
The meeting also heard that the local party remains in a sound financial position and is preparing to strengthen its fundraising and campaigning ahead of the elections.
Aidan Reed was elected Chair for 2027, alongside David Kinnaird as Vice-Chair and Data Officer, Simon Eves as Treasurer, Alex Wade as Secretary and Alexi Sugden as Membership Officer.
Members thanked Philip Dowd for his three years as Chair and his contribution to building the party’s campaigning strength across the New Forest.
The party now plans to expand its network of volunteers, recruit candidates and intensify its work with local communities ahead of the next elections.
