New Forest split as Waterside joined with Southampton
We note, with a mix of disappointment and determination, the announcement that the Waterside area of New Forest District Council will be placed within a new unitary arrangement alongside Southampton.
This outcome reflects a clear failure of leadership from the Conservatives. While County Conservatives backed one approach and District Conservatives another, their inability to agree a coherent position has left communities like the Waterside facing uncertainty and division.
It is also notable that Labour has no representation on the Waterside, leaving local residents without a voice from either of the larger parties throughout this process.
Despite this, the Liberal Democrats remain focused on what matters most — standing up for local people.
Your local Liberal Democrat Waterside councillors will stand up for the Waterside and its residents, fighting to secure the best possible deal for local people within the new unitary authority.
We will work constructively with the new arrangements to ensure that the Waterside is not overlooked, that local services are protected, and that our communities receive fair investment and representation.
While we may not agree with how this decision has been reached, we are clear that our responsibility now is to deliver the best possible outcome for residents going forward.
